What do you love most about being part of Aspiriant?
The people and the culture. Aspiriant attracts exceptional individuals who value the alignment between clients and employees and the collaboration inherent in our business model. I greatly enjoy working with such like-minded individuals.
What professional accomplishments are you most proud of?
I led the expansion of a US company into the UK from a legal and regulatory perspective. I enjoyed learning about the UK legal and regulatory system and the challenges associated with being a registrant thereunder.
How should people think about their wealth?
Think of wealth as a tool. It gives you the ability to achieve your goals, not only for yourself and your family but also for your community.
What do you love to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wife and three children. We travel as much as possible and enjoy cooking, swimming, watching movies and playing board games together.
What would you be doing if you weren't working for Aspiriant?
Ever since I was in law school, I have wanted to teach law at some point. My dream is to teach a class on the history of contracts, from antiquity to the present. I don’t know if anyone would take this class, but I would love to teach it.
What was the most influential book you've read and why?
"An Economic History of the United States: From 1607 to the Present" by Ronald Seavoy. This book was one of the first that led me to understand how much history is shaped by economics.
What personal accomplishments are you most proud of?
Although I’m sure they would bristle at being relegated to my “accomplishments,” I am most proud of my three children, who amaze me on a daily basis.
Bio
Mike joins Aspiriant as General Counsel. He is an experienced corporate attorney and legal executive with extensive experience in securities and finance. Prior to joining Aspiriant, LLC, Mike was head of legal for Wilshire Advisors LLC in Santa Monica, California. He provided legal advice and support to senior management regarding investment management, risk, regulatory and employment issues, M&A transactions and governance matters. Mike managed a legal team working in the U.S., U.K. and E.U. He also handled the structuring and forming of various investment fund vehicles in the U.S., E.U., Cayman Islands and other jurisdictions. Mike is well-versed in compliance issues and handled litigation and regulatory matters for the company.
Before joining Wilshire, Mike worked for Relativity Media, LLC in Beverly Hills, an entertainment and media production and distribution company. He represented the company across various M&A, financing, commercial transactions, and corporate matters. Mike began his legal career at Latham and Watkins, LLC in Los Angeles, where he served U.S. and multinational companies, financial institutions, and private equity firms in debt and equity offerings and other capital markets transactions.
Mike earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Michigan and his Juris Doctorate with a Certificate in Business Law from the University of California Los Angeles School of Law.
