Randy Rae CFA®, CFP®, MBA

Manager in Investment Advisory

Meet Randy

What do you enjoy most about wealth management?

It’s challenging — Wealth management provides us with an unending series of intellectual challenges. Seemingly every day, we have a new puzzle that we need to solve on behalf of our clients to help them achieve their financial goals. I also enjoy helping people.

What's the biggest challenge?

Investing almost always requires patience and the discipline to adhere to a strategy, even when it doesn’t appear to be working.

What do you love most about being part of Aspiriant?

The team culture. Everyone is focused on doing whatever is needed for the good of client.

What quality of yours makes you best suited to what you do?

My long-term focus and discipline. I know that investing is a marathon, not a sprint, and I can keep my eye on the longer-term objective without getting distracted by short-term noise.

How should people think about their wealth?

People should think of wealth as a means to an end, but not an end itself. Wealth is something that can be used to increase your happiness and the happiness of others (often, increasing others’ happiness adds to your happiness).

What do you love to do outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family including attending Stanford women’s basketball games. I also enjoy masters swimming and other types of exercise that provide a physical challenge while also relieving stress.

What was the most influential book you've read and why?

The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. This book introduced me to what is now called behavioral finance, and it taught me how an intelligent investor can profit from other investors’ behavior if we have the patience, discipline and courage to think and act differently than the herd.

What personal accomplishments are you most proud of?

Helping my wife raise our two wonderful daughters and watching them grow into thoughtful, caring young women.
