What’s the biggest challenge?

As part of a fiercely competitive industry, staying abreast of all the moving pieces, such as tax laws and financial regulations, is no easy task.

What do you love most about being part of Aspiriant?

The camaraderie of our people. And of course, our clients!

What professional accomplishments are you most proud of?

Moving to Los Angeles to join our Family Office Services group was a big commitment. I’m proud of the success our group has had and the role I’ve played in helping shape that success.

What quality of yours makes you best suited to what you do?

A balanced mix of both left- and right-brained qualities.

What do you love to do outside of work?

I enjoy long road trips, backpacking, chess, and especially pocket billiards. I’ve been competing in pocket billiards tournaments since I was 19.

What would you be doing if you weren’t working for Aspiriant?

I would be playing third base for the San Francisco Giants

What was the most influential book you’ve read and why?

I was enamored by reading “Into Thin Air” by Jon Krakauer. It makes you realize not only that one’s personal ambitions are truly limitless, but that it’s prudent to exercise caution when dealing with risk.

What personal accomplishment are you most proud of?

Summiting snow-covered Mt. Shasta in California was the most physically and mentally challenging endeavor I have achieved.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
  • I’ve held Series 7 and Series 66 securities licenses.
  • I passed Level I for the CFA® credential and am a candidate for Level II.

Ryan T. Nelson, a Manager with the Investment Advisory group at Aspiriant, has over 10 years of experience in the investment management and securities industry.

Having joined Aspiriant in 2012, Ryan currently serves more than 20 high-net-worth clients and families from California to Texas in Aspiriant’s Family Office Services group in Los Angeles. He is also a member of Aspiriant’s National Client Service Committee.

Ryan started his career in San Francisco as a registered representative of AXA Advisors LLC, a subsidiary of the global financial services firm, AXA Financial Group. At AXA, Ryan advised individuals and families on asset allocation and investment strategy. In 2009, Ryan joined Wells Fargo Advisors LLC as a financial advisor in Silicon Valley and partnered with two senior vice presidents in managing over $650 million in discretionary client assets across equities, fixed income and real estate. Two years later, Ryan joined First Allied Securities (an independent broker-dealer and RIA) where he partnered with an independent advisor in building out the investment practice of a select group of wealthy clients totaling over $300 million in discretionary client assets.

Ryan earned his B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Santa Cruz and is a CFA® Level II candidate.
